Immanuel Kant Biography: The Most Tricky Animal in Evolution: The Fantast

Protestant Philosopher living from (1724-1804) invents Philosophy of Egoism in the tradition of Zwingli, Calvin, Anabaptists, Pietism, Puritanism. Kant erects the Western sect 'Law and Order' (especially popular in Holland, Scandinavia, South Africa, UK, and 'US');

Friedrich Nietzsche blames Germany's heavy Protestant tradition for using Kant to corrupt philosophy, and Nietzsche criticizes Immanuel Kant for misusing being "great" philosopher to claim that the physical world is a creation of 'reason' (fantasy). Have some fun with a youtube: 3 minute philosophy

Kant puts: it is the ritual representation that creates the object, rather than the object that triggers the ritual behavior. In common sense: it are (god-given) dreams that create our 'reality', rather than reality triggering the dreams. Or: perceptions are god-given fantasies of THE mind (rational absolutism).

Kant dreamed: THE 'spirits' from space sent by 'God' created Life
AND
'knowledge' is given by your personal 'spirit', not by 'reality'.

Kant ferociously denied the common sense that happiness is a sound basis for 'moral' behavior. Because many thousands of brutally murdered Persians made 1 happy Alexander the Cursed many thousands of satisfied zombies, and that might be worth more than countless unhappy Persians. But why not TRY to make everybody happy? Nevertheless Kant argued that experience can't serve as the basis for moral laws. In Kant's view the superspirit 'God' designed 'spiritual' 'natural laws' to prevent 'sin', and obeying those rules is 'good' behavior even if that makes you very sad.
Martin Luther: All our good works are deadly sins, judged by God's laws. Text in protestant church-hymn: Adam's sin poisoned human nature
This was summarized by Immanuel Kant in a 'Law and Order' fantasy: All happenings follow natural laws. Kant about those very Roman Christian LAWS: "das moralische Gesetz in mir, der Gerichtshof des 'Gewissens', der mein Handeln beurteilt,...". (the moral law within me, the court of justice of my 'consciousness', that judges my actions...)

You probably might program 'Kantian spirituality' as a virtual reality on a modern day game computer.
That the way of archiving in our brain influences our fantasies about 'reality' makes sense. It doesn't makes sense though to think that 'reality' does not influence our fantasies about 'reality'. That is like assuming: Our brains produce dreams about archived experiences, without using their archive.

Categorical Imperative
Kant's most well known contribution to ethical discussion is the quite agressive 'Categorical Imperative'.

Such ends in themselves contrast with common sense 'Hypothetical Imperatives' (like: if you refuse to swim in deep water then you're in trouble).
A Hypothetical Imperative: 'If you obey God then you might go to heaven'. A Categorical Imperative: 'Obey God! It is your duty'
Henk Tuten: People who grow up with 'Categorical Imperatives' seem deaf for criticism. Fighting their behavior is like banging your head against a wall.
Such fundamentally programmed people use commands like: it is your duty to serve the army; it is your duty to fight terrorism. If not you're evil.

Deafness like that much later made Planck invent Planck's Principle: (in my own freestyle) it's MUCH easier to let brainwashed people die of old age, than making them change. And Planck didn't even know 21st century North Korea.

Making 1 sect out of 2

To 'counter attack' biographies that only in similar admiring texts tell about the brilliant merits of Kant, I'll give a complete picture, based on to everybody available internet information. And present real life pictures.
Kant was a great thinker, and left beautiful quotes. But he was not a 'complete' human, and his dated belief in general laws of nature (a priori or absolutism) should in present eyes not even be worth discussing. The World of Immanuel Kant measured a few square kilometers, and was drenched with fundamentalist protestant principles.
The 20th century fantast Ron Hubbard founded the sect 'Scientology', copying Kant's Enlightenment sect 'Science'. Amongst others in the 21st century this agressive religion recruted Hollywood stars Tom Cruise and John Travolta.
Christian Science is a meta-sect, 'above' sects like 'Roman Christianity' or 'Salvation Army'. You were allowed to be also member of any other common sect.

All accounts mentioned Kant as extremely studious (almost stubborn) and competent, but equipped with little flair or originality. More like a gray baptist present day IBM computer on two legs. The teachers of student Kant at university would have considered the idea of this shy young man with weird ideas becoming founder of a worldwide sect and being considered wise as a hilarious practical joke. His personal life was boring. He never married and was a shy homely eccentric.

The protestant loner Immanuel Kant pondered days and nights about how he could find a 'middle way' (a compromise) between the sect 'British Empiricism' founded by his intellectual hero David Hume and the sect 'Continental Rationalism' founded by Descartes.

Quote Kant: blackness denotes not only ugliness but stupidity as well
Leibniz Darwin Popper A.A. Walking Head Mr. IBM

Making 1 sect out of 2

rationalists empiricists Kant agreed with Hume's empiricism that our physical senses provide sense-experience ('sensibility') that is essential to human knowledge....

But Kant also agreed with the continental rationalists that essential knowledge can be abstract to be able to introduce Natural Laws (a priori). And introduces the abstract fantasy understanding for obeying such 'a priori'. And in this case he completely disagreed with Hume. Kant's dream: The fantasy 'Understanding' transfers the fantasy 'Natural Laws' into knowledge that can be grasped by 'understanding'. So the fantasy 'understanding' attacks the fantasy Natural Laws to turn them into a third fantasy. Immanuel Kant used fantasy (metaphysical a priori) to explain common sense experience. He must have argued as is typical in compromises: two times a little bit wrong is exactly right, and Kant thought to have saved the quarreling scientific world in Western Europe with his Enlightenment fantasy 'understanding'.

Kant introduced the human mind as an PRODUCER of experience i.s.o. an active sense receiver of perceptions of reality.
Kant argues that to experiencing takes an 'objective' world. He meant: I can act as outside 'the world' and observe using my own fantasies. Such dreams he saw as 'objective'. That implies that every junk having a trip full of hallucinations is 'objective' (Henk Tuten: I would prefer the word 'abstract').

Immanuel Kant might be seen as the first of a generation of modern lawyers. Producing thousands of rules i.s.o. simply using common sense. Unknowlingly Kant triggered firms like the present Smith/Johnson/Smit and Partners. Not really adding to the common sense value 'respect', but increasing the abstract value 'power'. Such dominant priests of traditional knowledge were known in ancient Egypt as High Priests. In Israel the name 'Pharisees' came into use

Kant tried to connect rational with empirical and moral philosophy. Still awfully necessary in the 21st century, but with use of relative meta ethics. Because by translating christian morality in dubious 'a priori' (absolutism) he ignorantly realized a western world dominated by rational thinking
Buddhism can supply a thoroughly tested relative meta ethics, with its first 3 Noble Truths

Christian Science

Surprise: the abstract reasoning of the loner Kant was considered VERY 'deep' in Western 'Christian' circles. Whole generations of philosophy students were told that his Critique of Pure Reason was brilliant (many brilliant fairy tales make more sense). Reading his Prologemena though is sufficient to grasp his intention, and the way he tries to fulfill them.

Kant was forbidden by his king Ferdinand of Prussia to lecture about matters concerning belief (in fact very wisely meant to keep the fundamentalist protestant Kant away from ethics). But after death of this royal person the fairy tales of a not very original bachelor nevertheless succeeded in realizing a pause in intellectual thinking in the 19th and 20th centuries. Tough misunderstanding, many websites declare him holy.
I only guess that a lot of dull people unconsciously realized to profit from his lies. Many of those people 'fled' Europe to find a more prosperous future in The New World.
Indeed in the USA there are people that beleave in UFO's, vampires, spidermen, Terminators, etcetera. And the FBI beleaves in terrorists like Osama bin Laden.
But it might have been obvious that in abstract thought EVERYTHING is possible. Especially if you ignore the intuition in moods, like Leibniz promoted.
Kant states that all knowledge begins with experience, but also that there is nothing higher than reason. Weird .... 2 contradicting statements, like defining 'right' is 'left'. Not that strange when knowing that Immanuel Kant thought that reason is more than juggling with knowledge, and produces understanding. And supposed that limited sense experience gave clues to 'reason' about the supposed 'Divine Laws' of nature.
Kant also argued that we can never know what something actually "is" because all we have is our senses information. Sofar he makes sense, but (inherently VERY arrogant) he values billions of years progress in evolution insufficient. And he INVENTED fantasy rules as 'a priori' Laws of Nature in evolution. Absolute ones and very much product of culture and time.

As lecturer in Metaphysics (abstract thinking) professor Kant showed to be an impressive speaker, and students often only came to admire his auditory talents. Realize though that abstract thinking may be seen as formalized lying.
VERY serious is that Kant might be seen as a pathological liar. And that especially in baptist USA and in lesser degree in Anglican England in leading circles this behavior became common. Unacceptable, but extremely difficult to handle. Kant might be seen as the first 'lawyer' or 'liar', a batman specialized in twisting truth.Kant perfectioned lying Interesting is that the combination 'law and 'order' became a couple in 1796..

Lying: Abstract Ethics

Lying is a way of structuring the moods caused by sense experiences into in some culture predictable behavior. Kant produced ABSTRACT borders (a priori) that in the Western societies of his time restricted moods to accepted behavior. He believed that these by himself invented and time dependent rules were 'given from God'.

Immanuel Kant used to keep paper and pen on his bedside table. Often he would wake up in the middle of the night, and scribble down an idea. Then he would return to sleep. One morning, he awoke convinced he had found THE answer to a question that had haunted him for months. In a dreaming, he had an sudden insight that seemed to crack this puzzle. In a hurry he wrote down: 'Think in different terms.'
What Kant expressed with this words was use of abstract thinking. If you don't like something having the color green then THINK it's dangerously red. You might become a danger in traffic though.
Abstract thinking is extremely powerful, but also like formalizing lying. You should ALL THE TIME realize to be TESTING some way of thought. I.e. realize that in common sense green is the ATTRACTIVE color of inspirating creative fertile terrorism and NOT as you LEARNED to think red
That is obvious in the following example: before you IMAGINED disagreeing Muslims as 'devils' or 'terrorists', they were common people. (Henk Tuten).

Kant was a son of modest parents, very religious members of the Protestant sect of Pietists This was a 17th century Christian evangelical movement emphasizing devotional meetings, Bible study, and personal religious experience. The sect Pietism originated from England, where it also triggered the another sect. That was Methodism, centering around the Wesley brothers. England around 1650 also saw the Quakers around godfather George Fox. Fox claimed that the Divine Roman Christ illuminates the spirits of Fox-fans.

Kant's own unorthodox religious teachings, were based on 'rationalism' rather than revelation. This brought him into conflict with the government of Prussia, and in 1792 he was forbidden by Frederick William II, king of Prussia, to teach or write on religious subjects. He nevertheless preferred freedom of speech, and after death of Frederick started lecturing. As protestant Kant had most influence in Anglican England, and southern USA.

That way the Western world came under spell of abstract thinking (rational thought). Immanuel Kant might be seen as trigger of a paradigm shift causing rational thinking in only the Western World, and especially the protestant subworld.

Quotes of Immanuel Kant

"It is beyond a doubt that all our knowledge that begins with experience".
"Experience without theory is blind, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play. "

"In law a man is guilty when he violates the rights of others. In ethics he is guilty if he only thinks of doing so."

"All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to the understanding, and ends with reason. There is nothing higher than reason."
(Henk Tuten: invention of the myth 'understanding', i.e. seeing abstract thought as more than a mapping of sense experiences. I think abstract thought is a talent of complex shuffling of pieces of knowledge that MIGHT prove power, but also is EXTREMELY dangerous)

"The history of the human race, viewed as a whole may be regarded as the realization of a hidden plan of nature to bring about a political constitution, internally, and for this purpose, also externally perfect, as the only state in which all the capacities implanted by her in mankind can be fully developed. " (Henk Tuten: Arrogance)

"...as to moral feeling, this supposed special sense, the appeal to it is indeed superficial when those who cannot think believe that feeling will help them out, even in what concerns general laws: and besides, feelings which naturally differ infinitely in degree cannot furnish a uniform standard of good and evil, nor has any one a right to form judgments for others by his own feelings..." (Henk Tuten: like Leibniz denying feeling, the very basis of all human knowledge. THE mistake in rationalism)

"Act as if the maxim of your action were to become through your will a general natural law." (Henk Tuten: again Arrogance)

Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life

Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing wonder and awe - The starry heavens above me and the moral law within me. (Henk Tuten: THE moral law: absolutism)

Individuals everywhere ought to be treated as ends in themselves (individualism ignoring the 'family')

Immanuel Kant considered life as abstract play between the borders set by Christian Law and Rules.
Kant hides with we cannot know with absolute certainty that it is weird to think that there is only 1 empirical cause and effect at work in the world around. And that this cause-effect is ruled by inventions of 18th century Immanuel Kant, called 'a priori'. Of course we are able to imagine cause and effect pairs in our own mind (called 'hallucinations'). Kant defines such fata morganas as TRUE knowledge. That is like presuming that thinking about water is all you need in a desert.
Immanuel Kant as the greatest philosopher of all times? Henk Tuten: I would say the greatest fantast of all times.
But for 1 thing we may be very grateful to Kant. It is also EXTREMELY tricky. Abstract thinking can do without the weird notion time.

Myth

Immanuel Kant deserved the created myth of respect. Abstract thought is tricky, but also required to understand really different ethics. His thought model proved way tricky. And then since Darwin western humanity mistakenly thought that being talented in abstract thinking meant 'being human'. It only means that humans became apes that thought a lot abstract. Like walking upright that takes exercise. Humans must learn which abstract thinking might be used. At present that knowledge (ethics) is insufficient.

Kant diminished reality to fantasy, a fantasy that need to be given law and order by (rational) reason. In ethics, Kant claimed collective happiness as a matter of no moral value. Instead he substituted happiness with ABSTRACT 'human duties' (his fantasy 'natural laws') .
The fundamentalist protestant Immanuel Kant created ideal conditions for the later fascism. Ages later the Nazis rejected intuition.
Kant contrary to thousands of years old proven common sense taught that intuition can't teach us anything about reality.
Henk Tuten: the US empire now is where Nazism was at start of WWII. The colonization of Iraq was the same kind of Blitzkrieg as the Nazis used to take Poland.
The Nazis ran a torture school in occupied Poland, to select slaughterers for later atrocities.
...Torturing of defenseless so called 'terrorists' became heavily defended common practice of US Army. US government prepares 'The Final Solution' of Islam resistance.
Bush quote: The American Right Demands a Final Solution for Immigrants. Tip: Replace the word 'immigrants with 'non-Americans'.
Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine are testcases to find out what atrocities against Muslims will be tolerated by 'civilized Europe'.
abstract thought or fantasy kant cartoon Immanuel Kant: The Heathens are everywhere

An annoying Kant clone is Georg Hegel (1770-1831), who talked about things like 'Absolute Spirit' and 'Divine Mind'
