Magic, God, Alchemy and Ratio are all based on creationism (dualism), presuming a 'design' ('transcendence'or 'meta'physics) behind physical reality. Magicians, alchemists, pure rationalists etcetera say things like: A world without transcendence would be a bleak, empty, and meaningless reality. They see existence as 'the cave' and want a 'world of forms', that like any blueprint/religion/theory/artificial-intelligence can be used, worshipped, 'understood'. Like 'transcendence' 'understanding' is a myth, and is only use of repetition in nature. By designing a logic around tiny parts of nature, that describes the repetition that is sensed. Western rational logic is a brilliant TOOL, a great achievement of Western Society. A perfect addition to intuition, but only perfect in limited fields. In general our DNA does an endlesly better job, everybody can with training use the 'view' stored in DNA. Views selected in millions of years evolution with trial and error
. Science is not value-neutral Using repetition as found in DNA and memory to adapt BEHAVIOR takes a lot of training. Finding new paths in memory is a matter of luck, a lot of try outs and maybe talent (intelligence largely is training). Science is based on true-false logic and scientific research is not value-neutral. Science researches within selfdefined borders. Since especially Enlightenment not anymore similar to the border of Catholicism (see Christianity and Science). These borders might last ages, but finally those 'laws of nature' are 'busted'. Our sense experience gives us access to the empirical world within 'given by evolution' borders. Such borders change in evolutionary way, the pace is more thousands or millions of years. Start 21st century the 'evolution way' has temporarily become totally dominated by the 'human way'. But change in 'human way' is a flimsy temporary part of change in 'evolution way'. Say 1 out of 100.000 students who finish university is sufficiently critical of the cultural 'human way' and 1 in a million is sufficiently 'stubborn'. That means that 99.999 are just conforming to the dominant 'scientific system' (including practically all of their professors). Most universities in decades don't produce even 1 behavior effective attacker of the dominant culture. Not because students who are critical of the basics of science don't enter university, but either they attack only 'in theory', or leave university totally frustrated, or become 'addicts of dominant culture', or are ignored/ridiculed until death (like the first 'ratio' attacker Vico). And practically all 'science attackers' who aim for a change in behavior (lonely prophets) die frustrated and unnoticed. Kuhn: A scientific community cannot practice its trade without some set of received beliefs. A brilliant AND confusing remark. Because evolution, unlike science, is NOT about human beliefs (conceptual schemes), but about ever changing behaviors (paradigms), and after a LONG TIME is archived in DNA. DNA is not some 'human made' model, but a 'made by evolution' archive of reality. . Science = Church of Ratio
. Relativism Explained
Catholic Science teaches that reality is mirrored in the 'Divine Mind'. 'Divine Mind' = Catholic 'Natural Laws' in 'Mind'-shape. The article Physics, Philosophy and Art highlights that formal Physics and Philosophy give not more than 2 dominant formal 'rational world paradigm' views on life on earth. Produced by 'divine christian minds'. Western physics restricted itself to only being relativist in rational parameters, art is much more flexible. NASA is a christian monastery of the order 'Rationalites', launching overweight rockets. Such 'monks' (no offense, just an insightful comparison) are also found in all Western Universities, huge buildings like churches. Rationality best integrated in sociology and economy. Most resistance to 'cultural relativism' is expected to be found there. From my own 1973-1980 time at university I remember lecturers in macro-economics preaching peculiar mathematically 'consistent' truth. Christians tend to see reality on earth as God's world. Most important, both Christian Science and Christianity are sceptical about relativistic theories of knowledge. Relativism seems to raise the for them irritating question: 'Can science survive without Christianity?' Answer: The talent skill of course survives without Western Christianity, but Roman Christian social ethics ('science') will be replaced. I propose the name 'circus' for training of skill. Most expertise is indeed found in zoo's. In certain subcultures relativism is denied. Nevertheless overhere generally (as natural) males appreciate pictures of attractive naked women, and are indifferent to pictures of naked attractive men. Well that's relativist behavior . Don't expect me to go into discussion, because I want to stay away from compromise. But I read 'everything' related to paradigms, and try to stay up to date. I appreciate all serious articles, from whatever 'side'. And from now on I'll minimize use of the name Kuhn. He did a fine job, but it's confusing that he treated only paradigm shifts WITHIN 'science'. Within any paradigm you have Maintenance Paradigm Shifts. Those shifts are turbulant but can be handled by the temporary knowledge wizards (for instance 'scientists'). An essential ethical change takes very rare Reality Redesign of Tornado Force. Because having many limiting basics in social ethics asks for 'a clean house'. Note that Kuhn states that 'tacit knowledge' effects the way scientists observe (it's a view INSIDE a paradigm). INSIDE a paradigm Kuhn distinguishes 'Normal' and 'Revolutionary' Science - In normal science, the core basics of the paradigm are not questioned. Basics like 'God' or 'mind' exists (body-mind dualism), change is continuous. In revolutionary science less essential basics get 'maintenance', but core basics are also not questioned. - Normal science is cumulative. Revolutionary science is not. - Normal science is linear. Revolutionary science is not. - Normal science changes gradual. Revolutionary science produces 'puffs' to expand the paradigm. Scientic Revolutions only aim at innovation INSIDE the paradigm. That means that revolutions only aim at keeping the paradigm up to date. Nevertheless the limited Christian Science in technology proved to be very innovative. The 'falsification' method of Karl Popper only tests TRUE or FALSE in the logic of this method (WITHIN the rational worldview, and between 2 revolutions). It is for 999.999 out of a million scientists 'impossible' to puzzle with ethical values OUTSIDE their paradigm, without severe push. Simply because such values according to their rules don't exist. They might see them, but will say: that MUST BE an illusion I.e when talking about Kuhnian Paradigm Shifts. An Ethical Law Shift is like suddenly discovering hidden laughing mirrors. Skill just proceeds. . Relativism is NOT slippery A man of knowledge is an inquirer, but always WITHIN some cultural surroundings. For instance a christian scientist researches within Roman Christian or 'rational' settings (absolutism). A man of wisdom always seeks balance and uses cultural relativism. Relativism is NOT slippery; that view was a misunderstanding by accident caused by Einstein with his spontaneous quote: Relativity applies to physics, not ethics (when he had thought about it, he would have known better). It is THE reason to focus on only physic paradigm shifts (like Copernicus). Such shifts already raise vehement moods. Copernicus wrote to his pope: I CAN easily conceive, most Holy Father, that as soon as some people learn [what] ... I have written [..] they will cry out at once that I and my theory should be rejected. Ages later Alan Musgrave said: [Calling some people experts] raises the question of whether those SOCIALLY recognized experts really are experts: [..] Socially recognized experts can always be wrong. Try to imagine what hell breaks lose when social basics are altered. Suddenly 'experts' become amateurs. But if such amateurs use same SOCIAL rules inside and outside their home , then they'll get into serious trouble. And then their house is still in a 'rational' part of town.
Scientists never consider: "what IF Reality doesn't work like our basic assumptions?" Scientists use a set of given presumptions (natural laws = the toolset) to provide background for their research. Scientists don't question the toolset. A very dangerous circular view: science ('rational toolset') validates itself by selecting hypotheses that can be demonstrated (argumentation or word juggling) to be in the 'rational toolset (read: that are 'science') - they 'work' in 'practice' = they 'rationally' work using a 'rational toolset' in a 'rational' practice.
. Knowledge Definition: Mood history archived conocimiento definicion / connaissance definition / savoir definition / pengetahuan / definição conhecimento / bilgi tanim, malumat tanim ,
The present period of human history in the very young religions 'Western Philosophy' and 'Western Cognitive Science' is often called "The Age of Knowledge" or "Knowledge Society".
That nicely points at the religious misconception. Knowledge outside experience is a myth. Since Enlightenment the Western World human believes
in abstract knowledge, in abstract intelligence. And in Unidentified Flying Objects like 'spirits'. A fantasy already started by Aristotle, known as 'split of body and spirit.Knowledge = the sum of all translated sense experiences Reality might be seen as a 'semi-continuous' flow of events. Such discrete events are for a tiny part recorded by our senses, and since Enlightenment in Western countries labelled with the fantasy 'continuous'. Then our brain starts playing poker with such sense-movies (using some kind of logic = ethics). Mainly trying to make sense (consistency) by comparing with personal and cultural history. All the time creatively seeking for new ways of updating history. Like: last time I shook my butt this guy fell for me, i.e. wise response for females when meeting 'guys' = shaking butt Until ... world history really doesn't fit the endlessly with shifts in Kuhnian Paradigms updated model anymore. Challenge to create a Fresh New World. People can act quite aggressive on certain knowledge, this only means that the moods caused by this knowledge in their turn cause the cultural response 'vehement defense' (war on terrorism). Not because of being good or evil. They have kill-skills, but causing friendly moods is 'easy'. Is mathematics also intuition? Yes, structured manipulating of sense experiences with use of some logic tool out of the toolbox mathematics I.e. intuition plus some logical juggling that even might be performed by a complex but dum computer . A dust cleaner 'understands' by fully automized applying of some programmed simple logic, like 'suck' when button=ON AND 'wait' WHEN button=OFF. Human 'Understanding' is an Enlightenment myth for (mood-reaction) archive upgraded with ON/OFF logic. The religious dream 'understanding' is VERY tricky and might lead to ferocious Wars on Terrorism against peaceful cultures. When ON in a completely hidden way is programmed as: Roman Christians are Superior, Kill all Russians or Kill all Muslims. Use of logic to make human intuition more consistent is EXTREMELY dangerous. In near future better use such logic only in technology. Already the ancient Greek freethinker Plato saw intelligence (creatively transferring experience into knowledge) as the only 'true' sense. Use of logic also made knowledge more repeatable and thus reliable. Because 2 humans using the same logic have a bigger chance of reaching simular results Using logic as more than a TOOL is like freeing 'spirits' from their dungeons.. That is thinking in terms of split mind and body or 'computer thinking'=Idea of 'God in a Rucksack' (rather arrogant) . Knowledge is Experience archived I. All knowledge BEGINS with experience II. Human intuition can be made more consistent III. Science tries to make knowledge fit local experience IV. Experience is Unlimited, and there are an unlimited number of logics V. Metaphysics = Pure Logic (fantasy like the thoughts of Immanuel Kant) Consistent reactions are fine but should not hide the fact that DECISIONS are still made through use of intuition. Only the decision counts. Logics can be absoluti-ish or relativisti-ish, i.e. tend to become THE LOGIC or be open for change. Rational logic is absoluti-ish. I.e. a reliable logic in technology, but rigid for use as ethics in social behavior. Common Sense is a mixed logic produced and thorougly tested in billions of years by evolution. Resulting in the intelligence archived in DNA and as (mood-reaction) pairs in human brains State = Church of Science = Scientific Authority = Absolutism The separation of state and church is a Roman invention following from split of mind and body. That's why separation of state and science as suggested by Feyerabend is only more of the same. It is seperating church and religion. I'm sure another shape of church is easily found, because in ancient cultures the highpriests always showed longer breath than kings/emperors/pharao's. The 'churches' of Science can take any shape, 'states' are only 1 manifestation. An easy prediction, because replacing already started of the safety of homecountry with the power of multinationals. It would be reinforcing the 'choice' in evolution to replace Roman Empire by Roman Catholic Church. That finally resulted in more than 15 ages of stagnation ending in rigid power thinking with two world wars, a cold war and capitalism. Christian Science is not original Christian, but it is EXTREMELY important to realize that neither is Roman Christianity.
Not necessarily on purpose, but because thinking of colonized people as human animals WITH LITTLE spirit conveniently alowed slavery. No mistake: priests are fine peope, believing in their own religion. 'Scientists' believe in 'scientific' principles. Many of those rules of thumb are fine. Politicians only talk in weird language when listening with 'common sense', because they are highpriests of 'Management Science'. Theories are hypotheses, and not more educated guesses in the religion 'science' (pure reason) Of course in any religion there are many very different mantra's, but that doesn't change them being religions. Even within religions 'sure knowledge' might change, that doesn't change religions being 'rigid', and far from creative. Even religions don't pretend to know the answer to all questions, though most suggest to have answers to 'basics'. Hypotheses and Experiments are 'theory-laden' and the abstract notion 'objectivity' is a hallucination. The Church (ceremony part=political) now in a super science called 'Management Science' distances itself from most of science (research part, looking for 'truth'), because researchers in 'natural sciences' become too sceptical. Such thinkers should call themselves something like knowledge communicator iso 'scientist' and stop all 'true' logics are rational. The rational doctrine became dominant through acceptance as Christian Science by the Roman Catholic Church. Descartes was a Roman Catholic priest, and the logic 'rationalism PERFECTLY fitted the Roman doctrine of split of mind and body. . Virtual World: Catholic hallucinations around 'spirit' In the Roman Christian World (the Western World) the exchanging of common sense with 'logic' (some ethics) in the body-mind split took tragic proportions. Resulting in brilliant non-sense like: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength Logic is only very consistent reshuffling of sense experience. Useful in technology, but in social life with common sense we already have an immensely sophisticated multidimensional and relative logic. Common Sense is much more than an absolute logic (an inevitable unavoidable self-evident, and self-explanatory truth) around 'good' and 'evil'. An enlightening example in the Catholic Bible of talking around the 'Aristotelian paradigm' is the catholic invention the 'spirit' Christ ('only' son of God, member of 'the holy Trinity'). Funny is that in near future rigid members of the Catholic Paradigm 'The First World' will unavoidably stay behind in some kind of 'Rational Dimension'.
Think for a moment of highpriests in ancient Egypt. These 'scientists' designed amazing things like pyramids.
And had a peculiar way of looking at life. Their universities (temples) were mysterious buildings full of tricks.
Anyway, highpriest were VERY influential. In 21st century Western society highpriests of 'rationality' are called 'professors'. Such 'professors' in temples like "NASA", "MIT"or "Wall Street" use powerful rituals. Professors and assistants are often organized in 'offices'. An extremely powerful 'office' with awfully mighty wizards is called "Morgan Chase". Nutron Sciences and High Flux Isotope Reactors are mighty 'rational' tools used by 'professors'. 'Professors' practice their religion 'rationality' in temples called 'laboratory', where they 'measure' in 'rational' way the 'rational' value of 'rational' phenomena in their ghostworld 'rational' dimension. Such 'technological' tools with a 'rational' tunnel view might detect Unidentified Flying Objects ('rational' dreams), but tell us nothing about smart social behavior in a HUGE common sense reality. . Virtual Worlds 'Science' is a peculiar way of learning about reality. In 'science', explanations are limited to those based on 'rational' observations and 'rational' experiments that are accepted by other 'scientists'. Explanations that are outside 'rational' domain are not considered as 'science'. Math or logic though has common sense powers. Logic can make reactions on moods more consistent. But also completely abstract worlds can be created. That is VERY tricky. Then 'acceptable' or 'unacceptable' are based on juggling with abstract notions. Man always used logic, but the evolutinary tested logic common sense. 2 fingers and then 1 more gave the reality of 3 fingers. Mainly man used the concept 'family'. Only when almost dying concept 'this body needs food'
Like ALL animals on earth man acted out of impulses (=intuition based on proven behavior). The intelligence of man is 'open minded'. Common Sense developed by trial and error, during evolution and ALLWAYS produced successful results.
Abstract organizing of sensory data (pure reason) is no pluspoint. In the Western World this was INVENTED in Enlightenment by Immanuel Kant Western man accepted fantasy (the abstract 'rational' view of life) as virtual reality. This produced the fantasies consciousness and understanding. Western languages gradually became more and more abstract.
Popper Kuhn Western Society increasingly relies on digital computers and software (implicitly using Karl Popper's IDEA 'falsification'). Mathematical rigor gives a feeling of 'certainty'. Math used in creative way also trains a feeling for 'uncertainty'. Inherently making you realize that it makes sense to respect different opininions. It is good to realize that a logic only gives result WITHIN the basics of that logic (closed circle theory). Politics relies on digital computers, as well as 'the army', and the systems of education. They defend the tiny local truth of a bubble of logic. Like creatures who try to get everybody in their own soap-bubble. Be aware that soap-bubbles (however big) end with a SPLASH! 'Invisible' embedded systems are everywhere. Being interconnected a huge one side system of manipulating information is made. Digital manipulation of STATIC knowledge (however fast) can't replace creativity combined with intelligence. Building machines around abstract principles and historical knowledge is EXTREMELY shortsighted. The present machines do not 'decide' (another word for 'taking risk'). Such machines never outgrow being very fast dictionaries in some language Any being uses memory + creativity. Creativity is just structured 'RANDOMNESS' (trial and error). A smart computer uses memory effectively (and not only 'rational' memory). That is the dictionary function. But is also minimizes 'risk'. Its intelligence is in random ADDing new behavior (evaluating random trials and 'taking calculated risk'). Evolution developed strategies to bypass ineffective behavior (i.e. inherently evolution evaluates the effectiveness and judges). Such processes sometimes took billions of years. Computers might speed up using memory, but by far are not ready yet to judge. Be sure that evolution found a way to bypass the stagnating Western Society. That might be a Total Paradigm Shift.
. Tool Making uses Virtual Logic
Somewhere in evolution humanoids started using tools. That was the begin of trouble. You have 'tool making' (skill or techology) and 'tool using' (the behavioral logic for use = ethics). At start making and using was closely connected, infact tool making was behavior too. But the distance between 'making' and 'using' grew more and more. Finally there was a virtual model word between 'production' and 'consumption'. A non-sense wordl without emotion. With the extreme danger of people confusing the emotionless 'model' for reality. Apes that use sticks to get honey is fine, but apes beating all neighbouring apes to death by using tools until then was uncommon behavior. ...much much later (though in evolutionary terms a blink of an eye)..... The human variant of apes in a few ages refined toolmaking to 'science'. But thinks that this is result of human superior 'soul' instead of common experience. The trouble started in ancient Greece, with a thinker called Aristotle. Aristotle left us beautiful common sense quotes, but also: Quote of Aristotle: A true friend is one soul in two bodies. Releasing the IDEA 'soul' and the myth that bodies don't matter (the body-mind split). Later this fantasy is copied by the Romans, because this split tolerated slavery. Quote Aristotle: Plato is dear to me, BUT dearer still is truth. This suggests that Aristotle the 'founder' of the Aristotelian world loved his own fantasies about THE Truth more than his common sense teacher Plato. More quotes by Aristotle: The law is reason, free from passion. (releasing the myth that abstract reason is 'higher' than practical emotion) Man is by nature a political animal. (releasing the myth 'politics')..and We make war that we may live in peace.(releasing the myth 'war for peace', many ages later used to defend war on 'terrorism) ..and Of all the varieties of virtues, liberalism is the most beloved. (releasing the myth that individualist egoism is a positive quality) Many scientist today see science as: knowledge collected by following RATIONAL logic, and presented in a RATIONAL way. Science attempts to make a sharp distinction between the REAL world out there, and individual emotions, which they see as inconsistent and needing RATIONAL explication. Scientists group knowledge under RATIONAL laws of cause and effect, the RATIONAL relations that hold between RATIONAL properties.
Having cultures without leaders is asking for disaster. Then dropping bombs might be seen as only temporarily stopping of an other video game.
. Future of Education
Status Quo: In the Western World especially education in Universities became drowned with 'rational thinking', worshipping the fantasy understanding. That means that in the very beginning of the 21st century a fresh generation should take over, not yet 'spoiled' by university. Well known knowledge is that a new paradigm is accepted only after retreat of the VERY influential fans of the established paradigm. To try to teach through 'understanding' is a paradox, learning about reality by fantasy (pure reason) is a Western myth. Introduced by Immanuel Kant. If for instance trying to teach young unfullgrown humans what is LOCALLY acceptable or unacceptable behavior, it is counterproductive to bargain around the 'rational' values good and evil. Be clear, acceptable is stimulation, and unacceptable is friendly punisment. Otherwise you get fullgrown humans who cant accept authority. That is mighty dangerous.
21st Century Ethical Law Paradigm Shift change in Summary: -Dump the arrogant idea 'adult', human animals become more and more mentally mature between say 6 and 12. It takes a bit longer to become sexually mature, and to learn skills. Wisdom grows 'all the time'. And also dump the illusion Human RIGHTS - Technological Universities should dump rational thought as ONLY logic. That means reconsidering the role of calculus (mathematical analysis). Calculus supposes that 'things' can be differentiated and then again integrated. Like cutting a body to pieces, and pasting it into life again. A fine way seems to start with a thorough introduction of General Logic. - Outside technology Sociology and Psychology and Philosophy are lost. Because starting from scratch is easier than removing 'synthetic thinking'. 'Better' introduce something like the discipline 'Anthropology' at Chinese universities. - 'Politics' as discipline should be replaced by 'Communication' - The faculty 'Law' as producer of 'Lawyers' is once more continuing the rational religion initiated by Immanel Kant. A discipline Ethics of Cultures should replace it. - With the arrival of Internet a complete reorganization of 'universities' is necessary. All the faculties are variants of 'communication of moods'. Why not change the name in Communication Center? - The present generations say starting at 16 are still VERY important. Because young people are very creative but still should develop sufficient wisdom. That's a process that when starting with new ethics at least takes 10 years. . Life is a Unity
Without comment and without giving opinion I quote Traktung Rinpoche in Tantra
The Joker: 2 common sense observations. (Common Sense includes rationality and thus may value about 'science')
